Homemade Automatic Dishwasher Detergent that Works

Basic Disclosure for all post

As many of you have probably figured out, I love to make things. I make diapers, clothes, food-umm lots of food, shoes, games, soap, crafty things, and so on and so forth. As I have strived to both save money and use safer products, I have tried to make a lot of our house hold cleaning products. Many of them take two main products to make-Borax, and Super Washing soda-both are very cheap compared to the many “ready made” products on the market. Less then $8 for a box of both.

The first recipe I am going to share here is our homemade dishwasher detergent. I have adapted this recipe from another that I found that did not work too well in our hard water, even when I added Lemishine. It is SUPER easy, and is working quite well in our SUPER hard water. I will say, I still have to use Lemishine, but I don’t mind paying a bit more for it, when I can save $10 a month by making my own detergent ( we normally do 3 loads a day). Now on to how to make your Automatic Dishwasher Detergent.

Supplies:

Large Ice Cream Bucket
1/2 cup Citric Acid-available at bulk food stores
1/2 cup of salt-I use non-iodized salt
1 cup Borax-found in laundry aisle
1 Cup Super Washing Soda-found in laundry aisle

Dump all ingredients into the bucket and mix well. Use 1-1.5 tablespoons per wash in your dishwasher. This will clump together, just break them apart with a wooden or plastic spoon between uses.

In our hard water I use 2-3 tablespoons of Lemishine in each load.

I hope this recipe helps you to be able to save a bit of money and use safer products in your home.

Peace Sig
