On Your Mark, Get Set, Go…Farming is in gear…School is…

Out of the books and in the field.  I have tried several years, to homeschool through the summer…it doesn’t work on our farm.  We are up all hours of the day, lose our routines, and just pretty much have to be ready to head here, or there, or anywhere at a moments notice.

This doesn’t mean that learning stops.  In fact, my boys are learning how to work on different equipment, from tractors to balers, to rototillers and combines.  The learn about soil tests, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.  Don’t’ tell me they are all bad, we only use when we have to, to be able to make a crop worth more, than what we have put into it.

We will also plant a garden, where they learn a ton.  In fact, they do a lot of the work in our garden.

My girls are learning to cook…we are baking bread, cookies, salads, and more.  I am trying to get them ready for the day, that I may be back in the field, and that they would be able to get a meal ready on their own, while keeping a couple of younger siblings.

Homemade bread made with our own homegrown wheat.

God’s amazing painting.

So, as you can see, school isn’t stopping, just the book school.  There will be times we pull books out just to keep refreshed.

Do you stop for the summer?

We are living in the city - a small city, but a city nonetheless. :^) We do year-round bookwork of a sort, and our schedule over the next few months is roughly:
    - Sabbath Week: May 5-13
    - formal studies: May 14-June 22
    - summer break: June 23-August 5
    - resume formal studies (but lighter schedule through Labor Day): August 6
