Winter Promise Episodes in American History: Civil War ~Review

Basic Disclosure for all post

As many of you know, our family really enjoys history. The Civil War has always been fascinating to me, and well, I seem to be passing that onto my children. Earlier in the summer I was contacted about a NEW Civil War Unit Study for homeschool families from Spirited Autumn Hope the owners of Winter Promise. I have always been intrigued with the Winter Promise catalog and website, but never actually had the opportunity to dig my hands into any of their materials.

My First Winter Promise product

Now I have. And, I am really liking that it is pretty much all laid out for me.

Ten Week Civil War Study from Winter Promise. Very well laid out, easy to follow guided instructions. Lots of notebooking, hands on and family reading.

Easy to follow well laid out plan

There is a weekly schedule, that we are actually breaking down into two weeks due to still being busy on the farm.

See how easy it is to follow this layout? Your daily reading, assignments, videos, discussions and more all laid out for each day. For a busy mom, a mom just starting our, or pretty much any homeschool mom, this will make things soooo much easier. In this intensely busy season of my life, this has been a HUGE blessing!!

Civil War Notebooking or Journal Pages

Here is an example of the notebooking pages. We will be adding these to our American History Notebook in timeline order as we complete them. These pages are perfect for the reluctant child, as there is not a ton of blank space to be filled up. There are nice guides to follow that will help your student think about what they have and are learning.

  1. I have been looking for a Civil War program for my rising 9th grader. This program says that it covers through High School, but it is really difficult to tell with the sample they provide. What do you think…would this be too light/young for 9th grade or is it possible to add a little to it to beef it up? Thanks for your help!

    • Hi,

I would say you could add some upper level reading and writing assignments to reach higher grade requirements.
