How Routine People can Adapt to a Schedule.

I have been and probably will always be a routine person.  However, over time, with six children in the home, and knowing that structure is a must, I have had to adjust and take on a bit more of a schedule like system.  However, as with many things, I have had to adapt it to our family’s needs.

First, I looked at how our routine was working, then I added time slots for the items in our routine.  However, for every hour that is scheduled, I have fifteen minutes of free time.  That way, if we get behind, we have fifteen minutes to get caught up.  I have read about having margin in our lives, but this I believe is putting a bit of a different spin on that margin.

Now, I am not going to say this is easy, as it isn’t.  However, we are having some success at staying on a more schedule like routine, rather then just kind of flowing through our list.  With some time constraints, I am finding harder working, more diligent workers.

This also tends to help our day run much more smoothly.  We are able to get started on our school at a more reasonable time, it helps our children get through their school better, and we are having more time to get to the fun things, such as lapbooks, and crafts.

What changes have you made in your routines or schedules to get through your days better?  Have they helped?

LOL, well, my husband’s very appropriate nickname for me is “Rou-Tina” so I know all about schedules and routines and such. :^) I’ve had to learn to adjust for “life,” but I’m getting better at that! As far as home education, the biggest help to us was workboxes.

That’s an excellent idea. I have a very loose schedule, and although I’d love to have a more rigorous one I’ve found that it simply doesn’t work — for our family. Perhaps some day.

    Blessings,
