It’s that time of year, to make your homeschool curriculum list for the next year. It is a late night, lots of coffee, a calculator in hand activity that homeschool moms around the world are diving into.
The Homeschool curriculum list is not like your grocery list, the menu changes as your children learn and change. As they develop interest, this list becomes more challenging. This list will be something that the homeschool mom will plan to stick to for around 180 days of book work days, many do not, and that is ok.
When making and developing our homeschool curriculum list, we need to remember we are doing this to help our children develop a love of learning.
As I make my homeschool curriculum list, I ask each child a few questions:
- What is something you want to learn this year?
- What has been one struggle you had that you believe we need to change?
- What was your favorite curriculum we used? Why?
- What did you not like? Why?
- As you have looked through my homeschool magazine, and catalogs that we have, is there something that you would like to try?
Once I get their answers, I try to pick curriculum that will meet their needs.
When trying to decide on curriculum, it helps to know what kind of learner you are working with. I am not one, to pick only by their learning styles though, as with six children that would be quite expensive. I try to pick things that will be easy to adapt for multiple learning styles. There are also a couple of subjects that are hard to find to match up with a kinesthetic learning style… writing and grammar, at least in the upper grades.
What is on my homeschool curriculum list:
Numerous Books from YWAM Publishing.
All About Spelling~Hands on Spelling, great for those young kiddos who are struggling with speech. The learning isolated sounds in this has been AWESOME for my little one with speech issues. HUGE bonus for us!!
Levels for my older children.
All About Reading~This is a hands on reading/phonics curriculum!! AWESOME stuff here.
Growing with Grammar and Winning with Writing
We are speeding through the two sets I just purchased for my children and I am loving how much they are picking up. I plan to see if anyone at Teach Them Diligently has it.
A Plus Tutor Soft ~Great Math Curriculum available as an online program, CD-ROM program, or textbook program. Using this for my youngers now and LOVE it!! If you plan to purchase this use code: PRAIRIE to get 20% off!! See more here.
Home Educating Family’s On the Go Planner. This is my brain, well besides my smartphone, but I like to have a written calendar also. This one is AWESOME!!
Last year while at the Teach Them Diligently Convention, I picked up a Sample of the Seeds Family Worship Cd. We LOVE it, so I plan to purchase a few more this year!!
TruthQuest History is another need we have. I need to complete our set. This history program is full of literature lists that has been screened, and is a Christian Worldview History commentary that helps your children think through history and see how Gods hand has been in it all!!
We love using the A Journey through Learning Binder Builders with our TruthQuest History.
Saturday, I received the Parent Cards from We Choose Virtues, WOW, I love these, I am planning to get some more items from their store soon. Check out all the goodies to help instill Virtue in your children!!
Mom’s we need to remember that these homeschool curriculum lists likely will not stay the same through a year. As much as we put into making our homeschool curriculum list, things just don’t seem to work out like we planned. We have to learnt o modify and adapt curriculum for our families. So, when looking at curriculum, but sure to make mental notes how easily it can be modified.
Have you made your homeschool curriculum list? Are you headed to a convention?
