If you have read my blog much, you know I like to stay as natural as possible with cleaners and such, but I also like to keep our medicines on the natural side.
We have had our share of ear infections. Our two oldest, before I learned about nature ways to help clear an ear infection had tubes, and well, I am not sure that it made much of a difference.
Our youngest four have only been treated with natural medicine and the occasional antibiotic for their ear infections. More often then not, though we treat as Pete and Maribel explain below.
I recently received the Dr. Mom Otoscope $24.97, to review. I had an older scope, but it had quit working. This left me often wondering how bad one of my children’s ears really was when they would tell me it hurt. I think it led to some extra doctor appointments too and maybe even a few un-needed rounds of antibiotics.
The Dr. Mom Otoscope is so much better than the one we had. It is very easy to see what is going on in the ear, and it does have a bit of magnification to help you see the little areas better. The light is very bright and does not change the color of the tissues you are looking at.
As part of my review, I will be giving one Dr. Mom Otoscope to one of my readers. You will definitely want to enter to win. Entries are being collected below the article below.
I received this otoscope in return for my honest review.
Mullein Oil: Basic Ear Care
By Pete & Maribel Hernandez Copyright 2012 All rights reserved.
As you learn how to use Dr. Mom otoscope, you’ll eventually want to learn what to use for ear infections. If you like natural remedies, here is an option. Mullein oil has been well documented for ear conditions.
If you order you Mullein oil, make sure you ask for Verbascum thapsus, the botanical name. You want unadulterated mullein. Not fillers. Mullein oil is made by infusing the flower heads into a carrier, oil like olive oil. The quantity varies greatly among producers. Dilute Mullein oil with equal parts of olive oil, before use. If you don’t, might find it’s a little too strong.
For earaches apply a few warm drops into ear canal.
Some of the properties found in Mullein include demulcent, (herbs that are usually rich in mucilage and can soothe and protect damaged or inflamed tissue).
Also, it is an vulnerary (promoting cell growth and repair), as well as an anodyne (relieving pain.) The high content of mucilage found in the leaf along with the plant’s antibiotic qualities makes this herb perfect for a broad range of ear conditions. You’ll appreciate the mucilaginous protection to mucous surfaces.
Some folk names include Velvet Plant, Candle Leaf, Indian Tobacco, even Blanket Leaf.

With 6 kids, we’ve definitely had our share of ear infections. I have several kids dealing with allergies. It would be nice to be able to check for myself if they really had an infection or if it was just fluid from allergies. It would certainly save doctor visits.
Oh…get him to the doctor as soon as we can to get meds. Its so hard to tell if he has an infection usually until its bad and hurts so much. Feel so bad when Carter has one. Would love to try natural remedies!
Great review.. And I really love to have that giveaway.. It would really be so nice that I can try it out..

We’ve only had one diagnosed ear infection in all five of our kids so far. Our Dr. said it was really bad and prescribed antibiotics. I have often wondered if someone has one though and wished I had an otoscope. We just don’t go to the Dr. very often, only if we think there is something serious going on or something that doesn’t seem to be getting better on its own after a fair amount of time.

Many medical students want to purchase top name-brand equipment, and indeed this should be the case for such instruments as stethoscopes, this strategy is not always needed for diagnostic kits.

my son gets ear infections with every cold he catches
With 3 little boys and living in FL (swimming!) We have had our share - I only take them to the DR when I really have to - I’d so love to have this - it would help me in determining when Oregano oil is doing the trick or if they must hv antibiotic (hate for them to have them too often)

yes my daughter gets them
I must confess when I saw what was being given away, I didn’t even know what it was. But now that I do, I would love to have one. I wonder if somebody could use it to see what’s going on in my ears. I’ve struggled with vertigo and balance problems for several months and haven’t wanted to go to a doctor preferring to pray for healing. Maybe we could see what’s happening if we had an otoscope.

my grandson seems to get ear infections all the time
unfortunately, we do have ear infections around here, some of them severe, that have included needing to burst the eardrum to let out the gunk (done by ENT) would be great to have this so it wouldnt get that far in the future…
We have dealt with ear infections a lot. Our youngest dd has had them frequently. I would love to have this otoscope, so I can tell if she has an ear infection before going to the dr.
My son gets ear infections and I was thinking it would sure be nice to have an ear scope “thingy” to look in his ears before having to go to the doctor.

We use garlic & goldenseal oil for ear infections. Even if you’re not completely sure if it’s truly infected, it can’t hurt to put a few drops in their ears. It’s completely natural and unharming. Best part? The infection is always gone by morning!
I would love to win this. Our 8 yr old has had so many ear problems that she has had her right ear completely reconstructed and a titanium mastoid bone installed.
LOL! My daughter just had to get meds for an ear infection today. But she’s the 4th child and we’ve seen a very conservative pediatric for a decade, so I know she needed them at this point….but we’ve had many, many infections that we’d wait a day or two on and they’d get better, script in hand ‘just in case’ to prevent a return visit. Chiropractic care and/or homeopathic ear drops have been our friends. I had a cheap otoscope a long time ago - and you couldn’t see anything with it, but have wanted a good one ever since to gauge that need for a trip to the doctor.
We haven’t had to deal with ear pain often over the course of raising our 10 children, but when we do, we use Mullein oil - and essential oils.
This is a great giveaway! We love mullein drops for the ears. Don’t always have actual infections but lots of wax, some pain, etc from allergies. It would be great to be able to see down in them ourselves!
Thanks.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!
I have wanted one of these FOREVER!!!
I loved when I had to use the big fancy ones when I was a nurse in a Nursing Home but since coming home to be mom and teach there have been SO MANY TIMES when I wish I could have seen INTO my kiddo’s ears.
Thanks so much for giving one away!
Looks great! Would make ‘diagnosis’ easier
This sounds like a wonderful item to have in your everyday doctor’s kit! I would love to be able to add this to my growing collection of homeopathic treasures.
So cool, I didn’t know you could check for ear aches at home! I would love to win this!

We’ve never had many ear issues. I do own a very old otoscope and haven’t been able to replace the rechargeable battery for it; so, this would be wonderful to have on hand.
Thanks for hosting the giveaway.
Blessings,

Wow…this looks fantastic. My husband keeps mentioning wanting to get one of these so I’ll have to check this kind out. Thanks for the review
I’m actually surprised how affordable it seems to be. This would be great for me since the pediatrician is an hour drive away and sometimes I’m torn when the symptoms are vague and whether its worth it to go that far and expose the kids to all the germs in the office.
I would love to have an otoscope, to go with my stethoscope!

Oops! I should have said we don’t get ear infections too often, but usually have at least one per year.

My whole household has struggled with ear infections and the youngest now has tubes. We have started the foster adopting process though, and hope to be placed with more babies… This would be a very helpful tool to have!
we need one of these
I use a few drops of garlic oil typically in the affected ear(s) and that typically clears it up within two days. I’m going to have to try the Mullien oil too now, but ear issues are on the rare side here thankfully.

I would love to have one!
We don’t deal with a lot of ear infections, but we deal with small ear canals and wax build up. I think I need to get some mullein!
Would love to have one of these at home! Pick me! Pick me, please!
3 out of 4 of my sons have had to have tubes put in their ears. One son in particular has struggled with ear pain and infection even with the tubes in. I would love to have the availability to see inside their ears myself:)
Love Mullein! What a gift! Also love the homeopathic ear ache tablets for the days during the infection! What a wonderful way to help baby to rest!
