DIY Welding Sleeves

A few weeks ago, my husband, Brad, was working with another area welder, Steve. It was a hot day, and both men were wearing short sleeved shirts. After a little while, Steve whipped out two pair of welding sleeves. They cover and protect a welder’s arms from flying sparks and the UV light that is present while welding. That evening Brad asked me to find him a pair of these. I found lots of them, and noticed how simple they were. Rather then buying some, I made him some from a pair of old worn jeans.

Really Brad is a bit happier then that. lol

First, I found and old pair of jeans that did not have any holes from the knee down. The length needed to be around 22 inches. I cut the legs off at the knee. Then I cut the hem off. I then made a casing for elastic on both ends. Threaded the elastic through, had Brad try them on and adjusted the tightness. I then sewed the elastic ends together, and the casing closed. That is it.

I just 3/4 inch non-roll elastic. I chose this, as I didn’t want them to cut into his arms, and I wanted it to withstand a bit of abuse. ;)

Brad loves his welding sleeves, and I may just make him up a few more pair. I think appliquéing some John Deere tractors would be fun.
