As we tie up loose ends from the 2014-2015 homeschool year, we are celebrating homeschool by planning for next year. Earlier this week I talked about our need for a few changes. So, come celebrate homeschool with me.
With these changes come a need. Since some of my children will be doing more workbook work, I anticipate us finishing the day a lot earlier. I want to have several items on hand for them to work on that will be interesting, and educational.
Some ideas are:
Unit studies. I have one child that loves to draw and loves nature. I want to have some things ready for him to use that are not above his ability.
Copywork… Younger children often need to practice their hand writing more. They get bored easily with handwriting books. However, I have found copywork to be a great way to give a little extra. It also helps them with grammar and writing later in their lives.
Notebooking… We have talked about Notebooking before. But, as I was nursing our baby a bit ago, I got to thinking. How can I use those pages with my younger children who still struggle a lot to put their own sentences together? Well, I can print some theme centered lined pages and have them use those for their copywork!! My olders will of course be using Notebooking through various subjects through the year.
Reading. I want to have twaddle free books on hand for them to read. We do a fairly good job of this, but a few new books never hurt. I find that they are much more likely to practice reading if the book they are reading is more interesting than your basic phonics readers.
We are also entering new territory… yes, we have some highschool under our belt, but now we are about to get a bit more serious. I can’t duck my head and pretend we will just get through it without thought. No, I need to dive in and figure this all out. That is one reason we are simplifying things for the younger kiddos… my focus needs to be helping my oldest do highschool level work. I want us both to celebrate homeschool as we move through homeschool highschool together. The way things have been, that is not where we were headed. The only thing we would have to celebrate is that it was over. That is not why I am homeschooling, so adjustments need to be made.
One way we are celebrating right now… is gearing up to make a list of items to gather at really great discounted price from the Build Your Own Bundle Homeschool Sale.
