In our home, in the early years, we try not to do “real school”. We like to play and explore to learn at these ages. They learn so much as they play and explore. However, I am not against giving them tools, and Inchimals, available at Timberdoodle, is just one of those play and learn tools that will benefit any homeschool with young children. There is only one piece that a child could choke on, so you can easily take it out. if you have a mouthing child still, and keep it in a safe place. I still would not allow your children to play with this without supervision.
Inchimals is a colorful, fun, interactive math game for preschool aged children. It helps to teach them basic math skills such as counting, measurement, addition and subtraction. There are twelve colorful solid wood blocks, each has a different animal painted on it. Each block also has one inch increments marked on it, representing from one to twelve inches. They also each have dots representing one through twelve, to go with the number on each block. So, the twelve block, a giraffe, is 12 inches long, has twelve one inch segments marked on it, twelve dots on one end and the number twelve on the other.
There is a spiral bound dry erase puzzle book included. It has five pages of hints and tips, plus one hundred puzzles to help you work with your children while they explore and play with these blocks. Each page is dry erasable, and very sturdy. They even include a dry erase marker to use.
My two, four, and five year olds loved these. We even let out twenty month explore the bigger pieces. These really help children grasp a concept of the values of the different numbers from one to twelve. From the different lengths to the dots, they are great for teaching counting. One of the great games we played was giving each child a block and having them bring me three items from around the house that were the same length. We would then take smaller blocks and see which combination of smaller blocks would add up to that length. If you have preschool to kindergarten aged children who want to do school with you, this is a great way to introduce math. I will add the pictures I have after I have a chance to crop and resize them. Our 4 yr old injured his arm and that took priority.
