How is that for a recommendation? Are you ready to go buy all their books now? I am, my husband is, and so is my oldest son. Even the younger crowd in our family, loved their books.
When my husband and I pick out books for our family we have some criteria that we tend to use.
- Educational value
- Christian Content
- Appropriate content
- Reading Level
- Thought Provoking
- Does it inspire ideas?
- Does it promote ideas that are true, noble and beautiful?
Does this sound like a Charlotte Mason post? That is not my intent, but I have to say, I learned to pick quality reading material by reading about Charlotte Mason. So, it may tend to lend it self that way. We work hard to provide great literature for our children that will provide quality information for their minds.
Salem Ridge Press is making that task much easier. This is a publishing company that was established in 2005. They are reprinting books that were written back in the 1800s to early 1900s. The founder of this company is a homeschool graduate. Books range in price from $10.95 to $28.95.
Salem Ridge Press’s website is organized in a very thoughtful, helpful way for any homeschool mom. All books are categorized Alphabetically, by Time period/Location, Age Range, and Author. This makes this site so easy to navigate and find the books that would be best for your family—though I think every book on this site would be good for all children and adults.
Our family was privileged to be able to read Soldier Fritz, The American Twins of the Revolution, and Mary Jane Her Visit.
Our oldest (nearly 11) read Soldier Fritz, by Emma Leslie, in two afternoons. He got in “trouble” a few times for reading the book while he was supposed to be completing chores or other projects. He loved the book that much. Soldier Fritz is set in the mid 1520s in Germany. It is a story about the German Reformation. Soldier Fritz learns the true meaning of being a soldier for Jesus.
We enjoyed The American Twins of the Revolution as one of our read a louds during the week. This thrilling story takes children on a journey through the American Revolution. When George Washington has no money to pay his troops, as General Priestly’s children, the twins, get involved in guarding the gold meant to be used as pay for the troops. This adventurous story will keep your children on the ready for more about the lives and sacrifices made during the war with the British.
Our oldest enjoyed Mary Jane Her Visit. This story brings to life, the life on five year old Mary Jane’s Great-grandparents’ farm. From gathering eggs to berry picking, your younger children will enjoy learning more about farm life from the past.
Salem Ridge Press offers us book that our children will gain valuable respect of life from the past. From their books about Church history to their books about world and American History, Salem Ridge Press has done a wonderful job of gather books to meet the needs of those looking for wonderful children’s books.
