Nature Study~July 5 Garter Snakes

Basic Disclosure for all post

For my new readers, Nature Study is part of our homeschool for my oldest anyway, and it seems his younger siblings enjoy it much more then they admit.

My oldest loves snakes, he is quite careful of what kind he will pick up though.  In fact just last week, he was out messing around in one of our out buildings, and located a rattle snake…this is the fourth one we have seen at our home this summer.  They are looking for water.  It is very dry here, and we have had less then 3 inches of rain here north of town.

Here lately, Philip has set up areas, that garter snakes like. Honestly, I am not sure what he has done, but every time he goes out to one spot in our yard, there is at least one snake in the area.  Sometimes two or three.

Notice there is a snake head in each hand?  Yep, two garter snakes.

Avery large garter snake.  See that big bulge in the middle of it?  That could be why it is big, it eats very large _______.  We aren’t sure what it ate, frog, mouse—too big for one mouse, rat?

Here you can see it’s head in relation to the bulge…You do know that snakes can unhinge their jaws to eat right?

Here is a shot of it’s belly side up.

Our three year old Isaiah holding the snake…nope he isn’t scared.  This little boy picked up a yellow jacket with out getting stung and handed it to his daddy, then gathered a whole handful of blister beetles without getting a single blister.  We now have a ask Philip or someone if you can pick it up rule.

I think you can safely say I have a house full of Nature Boyz!

  1. you’ll have to show your boy the python that ate the aligator! It’s on the front page of msn.com I believe. Came by through the hiphomeschooling blogroll,
    Melyssa from http://www.thedazeofus.blogspot.com

  2. Waiting until the last minute to do the Edna search. Really, truly haven’t had time until today :(!
Your son would fit right in here. My boys love snakes too. I knew I was in for it when my 3 yr old caught a lizard, lol. It’s actually been a joy to see him interested in something (so many kids have no real interests) and a desire to learn more about it. He’s 11 now and his interests are slowly changing from reptiles to cars/racing.

  3. Glad you’re starting this up again! I’m hoping to try to participate more this year. . . I have something for next week! Now just to remember to link up!

  4. That is so cool! I linked up an older post of ours from when the boys raised swallowtail butterflies.

  5. Actually we now believe it is chicken eggs, that the hen has been sitting on for 18 days….GRRR. They should have been hatching the end of this week. We had five, now down to two…

  6. I meant that’s a rat in his belly. Bleck!

  7. That’s a rat and why I don’t live on a farm! lol
