44 Animals of the Bible Review

As one of the Moms of Masterbooks Bloggers, I receive a book each month written by one of the Masterbooks Authors. I have been
MIA from the group for a few months due to being a mom to my sweet baby, and needing extra time to adjust to adding baby 7. I joined back in November and received 44 Animals of the Bible.

44 Animals of the Bible Review from Betty at Peace Creek on the Prairie, one of the Moms of Masterbooks

Each beautifully illustrated animal includes details to help clarify its meaning for children, important cultural information, and connections between the historic world of the Bible and our world today!

This book came just in time to give to our seven-year old for his birthday. He LOVES animals and has enjoyed the book nearly everyday. He loves that even he can read much of the text in this book. I love that he is reading something other than a “silly” reader. He is learning about animals of God’s Creation, science, geography and Bible Verses.

There are snippets of character lessons interwoven in with each animal. Animal classification is slightly introduced.

God watches when the doe gives birth to her fawn. He makes the leopard swift to hunt its prey. From the exotic ibex to the more commonly known tortoise, these and the other wonderful creatures of this book will delight children and parents during an exploration of where each animal appears in Scripture!

The 44 Animals of the Bible are:

  • Shown in splendid, full-color illustrations
  • Included within the text of specific Bible verses
  • Easy-to-read with helpful details and fascinating facts!

God cares for the animals and He wants us to do the same, as they represent some of the most amazing and unique creatures that He has designed. Learn their importance and connections to biblical events and develop a cultural understanding of their place in the Bible with this delightful presentation.

As we read this book daily for part of his reading lessons, I am trying to emphasize the Bible Verses and find where the animals live on our globe with him and his other siblings.

44 Animals of the Bible would make a wonderful addition to your children’s library!!

Field Trip Friday~The Only Underground Salt Museum in the U.S.A.

If you read last week’s field trip post, you know that my grandparents have been visiting. We had already taken a few four generation field trip in Kansas. However, we went on one final trip this past Sunday, to the one and only USA Underground Salt Museum. This field trip was awesome. We learned about types of salt, what colors it, how to shine it up, and different tools to mine it.

Underground Salt Museum Field Trip

Underground Salt Museum Field Trip

I think one of the cutest things, is toddlers in those little hard hats. ;)

My children really enjoyed seeing the old equipment used to mine the salt, and seeing a bit of red salt.

There was some evolution in several of the posters and one of the guides talked about it a bit, but my children got the, “they are so lost” looks on their faces and we went on.

If you are in the Kansas area, I highly recommend this field trip, but know it is a bit pricey.

Field Trip Friday Four Generations Fieldtripping in Kansas

This week my Grandparents from North Carolina are visiting. It is nice to show them a little around our area. We went to Pratt and to Kiowa Counties and saw the Pratt Wildlife Museum and The Round Barn near Mullinville.

Visiting and exploring at the Round Barn, Pratt Wildlife Museum, and a Cotton Field we saw along side the road on the way home.

Our family got to help feed the reptiles at the wildlife museum. The snake Philip is holding is a Great Plains Rat snake.

We enjoy these family field trips and are having a great time with my grandparents. How often do four generations get to go on field trips together?

Super Moon May 5

Saturday evening we headed out to look at the "Super Moon". It was pretty, and quite bright, even with the clouds here.  God’s Creation is amazing isn’t it? Below are the pictures I actually took of the moon, using the camera we got Philip for Christmas.  He helped me work on the settings.  I think these turned out pretty good.

The Moon behind some trees.

Summer Fun doesn’t have to cost a fortune…

I hear a lot about how children don’t know how to entertain themselves. They need this electronic device or that toy. My children can play outside for hours, or re-enact the Civil War or some other historical event or a scene from a book for days…DAYS.

Every day my children have TWO WHOLE hours of down time. They are either to be sleeping or reading or doing some sort of hand work.

In today’s busy-ness, children get too much stimulation and forget how to not have it. Having two hours where they get no radio, no TV, no Computer, or other electronic device or verbal feedback from anyone helps my children to keep their ability to play without extras guiding them.

We love to have friends over and have picnics.

I know not every one has 100+ acres for their children to play on, however let’s leave enough space in our manicured yards to give children a place to run at home. Let’s give them a place to have their own gardens. My son’s garden is better than mine…Go figure…

Some ideas to help keep your summer fun, frugal and entertaining:

  • Bubbles~The bubbles I linked to, are the best bubbles we have ever bought.
  • Playing in the sprinkler
  • sidewalk chalk
  • gardening
  • planting flowers and blessing the elderly with the bounty~bonus, elderly love to tell stories from their childhood and children LOVE them.
  • Sew something basic
  • loopy pot holders
  • Museums
  • Library
  • Zoo
  • Swimming~we only go about 3 to 4 times a year.
  • canning
  • baking
  • crafts~nature crafts are fun
  • Nature Walks
  • Hunt for Tadpoles and butterflies
  • Gather toads to put in the garden to help control insects
  • Play in the sprinkler
  • Save old plastic water bottle, poke several holes in the bottom, fill with water, give one or two to each child, and let them have a water fight outside by having them squeeze them.

In today’s techno age, our children are forgetting how to play, how to not have something to watch or type or give constant digital feedback.

Most of these are going to be fun for you too!!

Nature Study~Herps are out in Central KS

Philip has been out hunting down the snakes, toads, frogs, salamanders and turtles. They are out, and we are having fun working with a Facebook group that is focused on these creatures in Kansas.

A week or so ago, my son found a pupa, I couldn’t get my camera close enough to get a picture that you could see.  However, my son was out side constantly watching it every day to see when it would submerge.

He got to watch it come out, and he held his hand out to see if maybe it would climb on so he could show the rest of us…and it did!!!!DSCN7228

DSCN7218

He observed for a little while and then took it back out to the bush where he found it.  About an hour later, it flew away.

I am so glad we got to watch it.

Have you done any Nature Studies this summer?  Add your link to any you have done since April, and let share them with each other.

Friday Fun School September 2

As I have mentioned before, Fridays are our Fun School days.  We play games, and do experiments and other such fun.

Photobucket

This Friday we will be doing a Nature Scavenger Hunt.  This is one of the activities in our Exploring Creation through Flying Creatures study.

Next up with will break out our new Scrubble Cube.  I am not even sure what we are doing yet…Might need to get on that ehh?

The younger crowd will be working on their basket of items I toss in.  Another thing I need to get on…

Oh, and you know what?  I came up with a great way to help my olders, whose activities don’t typically fit in our Friday Fun School Basket be able to see what is up for them each Friday also.

DSCN7207

I laminated business card sized pieces of card stock and I write down their activities.

We will be having a spelling bee also this week.

For math we will do math drill bingo.

Here are a couple of pictures from last weeks Friday Fun School.  We made airplanes to study flight, foil, and draft and other such terms.

Are you doing Friday Fun School ?  What activities do you include?

Nature Study~July 5 Garter Snakes

For my new readers, Nature Study is part of our homeschool for my oldest anyway, and it seems his younger siblings enjoy it much more then they admit.

My oldest loves snakes, he is quite careful of what kind he will pick up though.  In fact just last week, he was out messing around in one of our out buildings, and located a rattle snake…this is the fourth one we have seen at our home this summer.  They are looking for water.  It is very dry here, and we have had less then 3 inches of rain here north of town.

Here lately, Philip has set up areas, that garter snakes like. Honestly, I am not sure what he has done, but every time he goes out to one spot in our yard, there is at least one snake in the area.  Sometimes two or three.

DSCN6932

Notice there is a snake head in each hand?  Yep, two garter snakes.

Avery large garter snake.  See that big bulge in the middle of it?  That could be why it is big, it eats very large _______.  We aren’t sure what it ate, frog, mouse—too big for one mouse, rat?

DSCN6946

Here you can see it’s head in relation to the bulge…You do know that snakes can unhinge their jaws to eat right?

DSCN6945

Here is a shot of it’s belly side up.

Our three year old Isaiah holding the snake…nope he isn’t scared.  This little boy picked up a yellow jacket with out getting stung and handed it to his daddy, then gathered a whole handful of blister beetles without getting a single blister.  We now have a ask Philip or someone if you can pick it up rule.

I think you can safely say I have a house full of Nature Boyz!

A Few Changes for the Next Several Weeks~Family Updates and such…

I once heard how summer is supposed to be a slow relaxing and carefree time…Ummm, For Who?

Summers in our home are actually the busiest time of the year…

  • Farm~baling hay
  • Wheat Harvest
  • Animals
  • Garden~over an acre…
  • Preserving Produce~potatoes, onions, green beans, peppers, salsa, peaches, apples, and more
  • Homeschool Convention
  • Vacation Bible School
  • Company coming~3 different weeks that I know of.
  • Family Visits
  • Summer Bible Camp
  • A Little School Here and There
  • Friend’s Graduation
  • TOS Homeschool Crew starting back up at the end of June-Mid July.

So, as you can see, my time is going to be more limited then normal.  My goal is for my children not to dread summer because it is so busy for our family.  I want to still include a trip to the pool, wildlife refuge and time to play.  Therefore, I am going to be slowing my blog WAY down…2-3 posts a week.

Another thought here…Nature Study Tuesday has not had any participants recently, I am going to stop it…I hate to, but I have to.  If at sometime I find God leading me back, I will.  However, I need participants…Same goes with Homeschool Snips & Tips.

I will leave my buttons and info pages up for now…as I pray this is a temporary thing.  I need to make time in other areas of my life for a bit.

I have a few reviews for this summer.  So, they won’t completely stop…a few of them, I have asked to review and are very special needs oriented.

As we enter the warmer months for our area, I find that spending time outside away from the computer to be a priority…Why?

  • I can enjoy my family more outside of the four walls that echo the noise.
  • I can enjoy God’s creation and reflect on him more.
  • I can get lots of vitamin D
  • I can get exercise and help build a healthier me.

This past winter was quite harsh here and getting out did not happen much.  I want take advantage of nicer temperatures and enjoy God’s creation more.

Nature Study Tuesday~May 17~Nature Boy Tells about Baltimore Orioles~Today Brought to you by Nature Boy

The Baltimore Oriole is a colorful bird. It has an orange stomach, black head and wings, with some orange and white with in the wings.

DSCN6895-1

A good way to tell if this bird has been around is to look for it’s nest. Their nest looks like a crocheted purse, hanging by the handles, attached to the branches of a tree.

Oriele Nest

I have a bird nest collection of nests found on the ground after wind storms, and our Baltimore Oriels use net wrap from big round bales of hay for building their nests. Inside the nest there are grasses, and I have seen the Orioles picking up chicken feathers. I believe they are using them to line the nests. Their eggs are grayish in color.

Baltimore Orioles live in the East and Mideast regions of the US. We have seen more this year then ever before.

This post brought to you by Philip age 11, a dysgraphic student at Peace Creek on the Prairie. He loves to read your comments. Winking smile

Nature Study Tuesday~Creation Study with The Nature Boy~May 3

This post is a team effort from The Nature Boy aka our oldest son Philip and myself. We have worked on this together from keyword outline to rough draft to final copy.

Creation is the basic foundation of our Christian Faith. As Christians without understand creation there is no need for God…Could this explain the confusion among so many? If we have no creator, we have no need for authority, no need or understanding for right or wrong. God is our Creator, our Authority, and has provided us with a Savior.

Creation was written about 4000 years ago. Was it by chance? What about the order of the events of creation, were they by chance? No, God went through the days of creation in an orderly manner. There was reason and method to creation, just as there is when you prepare a meal. You don’t throw uncooked meat into most casserole or uncooked pasta into your spaghetti sauce. Much like meal preparation there was a certain order for the days of creation.

Day One of creation was the beginning of light and dark. The light became day and the dark became night. God saw that it was good. DSCN6799

Day Two of creation was the making of water, air and heaven. The air is heaven an expanse from the waters. He saw that it was good, there was evening and morning.DSCN6804

Horse water tank. Winking smile

He had to make light and dark, air and water for the plants… the plants would be the food for the animals, and humans.

Day three of creation was the making of land and sea, plants, flowers, grass and trees. Now we have food for Day Five’s creation. DSCN6800

Day four of creation filled the sky with the sun, moon and stars. The night sky was filled with the stars and the moon. The day sky was lit with the sun’s bright light.

DSCN6801

Day five of creation earth with birds and sea life, fish and such. They would need the plants from day three.

Day six of Creation filled the land with animals, and man. Man was made in God’s image and has been put forth to rule over all the living creatures. We are to subdue the earth by being fruitful and multiplying.

horse and chickensDSCN6806DSCN6802

Day seven of creation, has been made a day of rest. His work was done, and rest was needed from the hard work he had completed.

Nature Study Tuesday April 19~Garden, Lilacs, and Butterflies

Wow, we managed to plant 200 onion sets and around 100 potatoes…I didn’t count them. lol I have four rows that are nearly 20 feet each. Winking smile

Our lilacs are blooming and with them, have come the butterflies. We have spotted Monarchs, Painted Ladies, Sulphers, and Black and Yellow Swallowtails.

Spring has Sprung and the winds are blowing…or they have been. Like my van door…no? Well, neither do I. Winking smile However, that is a direct result of extremely high winds blowing, and me not allowing the wind to blow the door out of my hands. I just bet that little piece of plastic is a whole lot cheaper then a new door though. Winking smile

I will try to add pictures a little later. I took them, but they are blurry. My camera settings were on close up rather then landscape. lol

Nature Study Tuesday~April 5~Baby Possum, Owls and More…

Hey all, here is my real post.

Nature Boy isn’t quite done with his post for this week, so you are stuck with me. ;)

Sunday morning dh and oldest found a dead possum on the road. On their way home, they stopped to see if it had babies. Well, it did and this one was still alive…for a little while anyway. They brought it home and I attempted to be a mommy possum, but it didn’t go too well. We figure it’s real momma had been dead at least 12-15 hours, so the chances of me actually being able to save it were very slim.

Philip also found a rather large fence lizard. Sorry, the picture is blurry, but if you compare it to the other one, you can see how large it is.

Here is a burrowing owl. It is a small owl only growing to a mere 8-10 inches long as an adult. They nest in burrows that normally slope down for about three feet then go out horizontally to a nesting area ten feet or more from the opening. They line their burrow and nest with feathers, grass and dried mammal dung. They even use the remains of their prey. They eat insects, reptiles, and rodents. Hunting during the day or evenings. Their habitat are prairies, plains deserts and other open spaces. This one was found in our alfalfa field near our home.

Nature Study Tuesday~Nature Boy talks…

Guest post from:

Philip (11)  AKA Nature Boy.

I caught a fence lizard the other day. I set up a habitat with old decaying wood, rocks, dirt and growing cheat for it in an aquarium. I like to do a few science experiments with it.  I made a jungle gym out of yarn for it to play on, I will watch how it balances and moves on it.  As it gets tamer, I hope to observe it enjoying it.  I also, want to get one or two more lizards, so I can watch how they interact together.  I have seen him moving his tail around like he is talking, another reason I want another one, so I can see them interact.lizard 1  I feed my fence lizard insects from outside.  This time of year I have to find them under rocks and such.lizard  You can’t feed them rolly pollie bugs as they will make them sick and they will die.

I also built an ant farm.  I have gathered three different species of ants and put them in a gallon jar.  I found that ants as well as bees all have different jobs.  I added a bunch of dirt to the jar and observed them dig out.  The digging ants look different than the rest of the colony.  As I watched them, I saw they use their jaws to saw a piece of rock or dirt and then carry it out of the tunnel.  That is how they make the ant hills.  I feed them on bread using jelly and whatever else I am aloud to rob from the kitchen.  ants

I enjoy doing nature studies.  I to catch everything or keep it.  I like to keep small animals for just a few days to observe them and learn more about them up close.  My mom doesn’t always like it when I do it.  My mom likes to take pictures of the things I find.

Grab the button and link up your Nature Studies.

Nature Study Tuesday~March 21~Windy Kansas, Spring is blowing in.

There are little signs of spring all over. The strawberries are starting to poke through the hay we mulched them with, the alfalfa fields are more green then brown, and the wind is BLOWING. Blowing hard enough that we actually stayed inside today. Why? Because the pollens are high and the need for Benadryl has increased.

Though, I am glad to see signs of spring, I could do with out the wind that brings us our spring temperatures…or shall I say summer temperatures?

This week we saw a fence lizard, numerous insects, and a snake. Our opossum seems to moved on.

So, many of you are used to seeing pictures here, why aren’t there? My camera battery won’t charge and I can’t get one here, so I have to wait until I leave town. Winking smile

Weekly Wrap-Up~Starting Nature Studies Again, The Boys of ‘76, and more…

This week has been a busy week at home.  We have gotten up fifteen minutes earlier then last week each day.  Our nap/rest/reading time has been much more peaceful.  I think I will go another 15 minutes earlier next week and then see how this schedule works for the rest of the spring.

Why would I be changing our wake times?  Summers are hot here, and we plan to have a bigger garden then last year.  We also plan to go ahead and school through the summer.   At least with reading, math, spelling and science.  We will probably do some history too.   Schooling through the summer prevents us from having to review for the first six weeks next fall.  We just keep swimming as Dora would say. Winking smile

DSCN6648I am getting ready to start planning our late spring and summer schedules.  Part of this is the earlier wake time in order to be able to work outside during the cooler part of the day. Winking smile

For our read aloud this week, we started the book Boys’ of ‘76 by Charles Coffin.  We are all really enjoying this book.  We just finished reading about the battle of Bunker Hill.  “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes”.

We have also started our Nature Studies up again.  Just this morning we spotted what looked to be a small hawk of some sort eating a bird in our alfalfa field.  However, we couldn’t get close enough to see it well even with our binoculars.  We also have a possum we are enjoying observing.

My oldest son is wanting to learn more about electrical things.  He is very interested in circuits and such inside of computers.  Can I say this is all Greek to me?   I am glad he is able to find information on the computer and in some of my husband’s resources as I would not be of much help with all this.

As a family we have continued learning Latin.  My children are really enjoying Latin for Children.  Be watching out for my review of this program at the end of the month.

My oldest daughter has been working with fractions in her math studies.  This afternoon we will be making a mega-batch of Amish Friendship Bread to help show her how we can use fractions in real life.

We have started a new way to check how well we our children are doing on their spelling.  I give each of them a lap sized white board and call out a word.  They spell it and then I check it off of our master family spelling list if they get it correct.  This makes my children realize that I am keeping track and that they do need to try to keep up.  It is kind of like a spelling be, but it is written, not oral.

We are now halfway through our first Proverbs People by Rick Boyer bible study.  I highly recommend this study for your entire family.  My oldest two do write out the answers, but we discuss the question orally each day too.

Speaking of Rick Boyer, I have a surprise for my readers scheduled for next week some time.  Keep an eye out as you will not want to miss it.

Well, that pretty much wraps up our week. How has your week been?
