I have never felt comfortable doing just unit studies instead of our regular daily book work. In fact I had at one point stopped all unit studies in fear that our children’s education was at risk.
However, I have come to the conclusion that unit studies do supplement nicely what we during our regular book work, if I take the time to plan ahead.
For instance, right now we are adding in time for a study on our US, Presidents. We have put our typical history study aside, but are using TruthQuest Guide to find the books we want to use, and to read and discuss the Think Write questions.
I use copy work form our unit studies as part of our book time. We use art projects as part of it too. By planning ahead and having a plan put together before starting, I am able to add or take away what we need to, to make each unit study fit into our day.
The above are mostly planned out for you. This takes a lot less time to prepare for your family’s needs. I am able to print, plan and prepare. I also, try to locate and put all books we will use in a dishpan tub together.
Typically our unit studies take us about an hour a day. We do unit studies as a family, so everyone gets to learn a bit about something new.
