Priorities and Blogging

Over the last six months, I have grown more and more concerned about some things in the homeschool blogging community.  It seems that some bloggers are so bent on getting 5-6 posts up a week that well, other things are suffering…their homes, husbands, family, children, and even worse…their relationship with God.

Some call me unpredictable and sporadic, I have been looked down on in the past when I do skip around and don’t post daily…however, I have to do what I have to do to keep my most important priorities in order…

My priorities are more like this:

  1. God
  2. Husband
  3. Children
  4. Keeping my home up
  5. Homeschool
  6. Help on the farm
  7. A Journey Through Learning Job
  8. Life
  9. Life
  10. Life
  11. Blog…

If I can’t keep up with all the other things, then my blog is going to be the first to go…

And honestly, I make more money blogging with my priorities straight than I do when I push everything aside and try to keep up with the crowd…

What does this say?  God wants me to keep my priorities straight.

So, where have I been?

  • Well, there has been a lot going on.  I have been writing a couple of articles for other bigger, huge great, awesome blogs.
  • I have been working on my Two Teaching Parent Convention Workshops
  • I have been in the cow pasture—we now have 4 living baby calves.
  • I have been WITH my family, DOing lots of fun things
  • I have been working on some projects around our home
  • I have been working on our garden
  • I have been spending every evening with my husband.
  • I am preparing for another homeschool convention
  • I have been working through a challenging time with one of my children
  • We have been working on some new homeschool things

So, though I blog less, I am getting more done, in better priority…

In all honesty, I don’t think my readers probably have the time to read so many blog posts anyway, so, why should I feel that I should be the one keeping them from their priorities to read my blog EVERY. single. DAY?

So, no, I am not going to stop blogging, but for this season, it will be slower, and that is ok…

Totally agreed, Betty! I have never seen the need to post every day…unless I have something (of value) to say every day (which has never happened…and the one month I tried a daily post thing, I was stretched to come up with meaningful content). Truly, there is no point in writing just for the sake of crossing it off one’s “to-do list.” And then, of course, there is the matters of priorities, as you so eloquently state. You’re also right about the number of posts anyone can really read; in fact, with a lot of the people I follow who post daily, I rarely actually read anything they say…because most of it is not meaningful. And then, sadly, I probably miss some good things they do sometimes say because I’m so used to clicking past their stuff in my Reader. Posting daily seems to be the “boy who cried wolf” thing in the bloggy world. :^)

    Agree 100%

I aim for twice a week. Note: AIM! Sometimes, I nail it! Sometimes, I don’t… Over the last few weeks, when my Mother in law became gravely ill, and Easter Sunday, went home to the Lord..I made one post in 2 weeks, and used my facebook page to apologize for my absence, but my family needed me.

I love to blog…but it is NOT my master!

This is the first I’ve read your blog (just found it) and have to admit, I’m doing the same thing. Cutting way back to take care of other priorities. Every other day I dump my Google Reader of over 100 posts I don’t have time to read. So at least now, I’m taking a break from adding to the mix. Bless you.

Way to go girl! Bless you for having your priorities in the right perspective! I know there are many things that we as moms and esp. homeschool moms sacrifice to be with our children, teaching them and spending time with them. But I know in 20 yrs. from now I will not regret it! For the most of us, we will probably spend 20yrs. (maybe 30 for some) sacrificing things that we would enjoy doing because of our children. But you know, when I think of how fast the past 10 yrs. have gone for me and I know I am half way through..it’s really not that long to make sacrifices in light of what we are accomplishing. Time spent with our families is the best way to spend our days here on earth and we can’t get too much of that! :) There will be plenty of time, I’m sure, for us to pick up our hobbies and do the things we used to enjoy doing. And still have time to spend with our grandkids, if we’re blessed with them. :) Keep on keeping on!

All of us at one time or another have felt overwhelmed by our jobs, our family responsibilities, or just life in general.

So true! I haven’t been posting very frequently since the beginning of the year. Needed to get some home projects taken care of and get some successes going with our school. Now it’s garden time and, as we school year round, we still have lots of school going on ….oh, and then there’s a courtship thing going on, and the married dd with her four kids and the hubby’s travel schedule, and music lessons, and doctor’s appointments and the shopping and the cooking and the cleaning and the….yeah, blog just hanging in there, but I am amazed that people are still coming!

I like to pop in on people I haven’t “heard” from in awhile. I think quality wins out over quantity. ;0)

Following the beat of your own drummer and working within your own priorities is good, sound advice for any endeavor. The whole blog thing has gotten to me lately as my Google reader fills up with more and more sponsored or review posts…on a positive note, it makes it easier to choose what to read. But it does bug me to see post after post on the same topic.

What happened to all those endearing differences?

I’ve definitely had to reprioritize my life over the last year or so. I no longer blog because I feel like I have to get so many posts done per week. Instead, I blog when I have something to share. Basically, I’ve found my way back to the reason I began blogging in the first place.

My focus has to be on God and my family. I need to put them first. If I don’t do that, then it really doesn’t matter what’s going on in the blogging world because I’ve failed at the most important things in life.

    Great post!

Well said, Betty. Life is very full, and our utmost desire should be to bring glory to God with each moment. I think finding and maintaining balance is often our hardest task.

May you continue to reap God’s sweetest blessings,

I totally agree! I might blog a couple of posts in one day and then not blog again for a few days or I might blog daily. My blog is certainly not my first priority, nor is it a way of making money. It is simply my personal thoughts, things I have tried out (product reviews) and things we are doing together as a family. I agree with your priority list…God, my husband, my kids, my home and THEN homeschool, volunteer opportunities, daily life, etc. My blog ranks pretty far down that list too. So thankful to know there are bloggers out there who still believe in the values of God & family first when so many people are neglecting these areas to “grow” their blogs.

I’m doing 3 times a week - one “Christ centered” (although He is the center of all) one “Kids in the Kitchen” link up and then on Friday I do “Our Homeschool Week” it works well for us! ;)

You have nailed it. I read a blog post recently anyway decrying the daily posters and how most of the daily stuff doesn’t get read anyway. I’m aiming a few times a week now that our life has straightened out back into our crazy “normal.” See you at TPA!
