This week we are easing into the new homeschool year. I have four weeks of lessons planned for our new year, but we won’t start on them for at least two weeks. Because we took an unexpected time off through most of the summer, I want to spend some time reviewing where we left off.
Easing into this new year will also allow us to make needed adjustments to our schedule, routines and plans.
As we ease into our new year, we are working on:
- History Lapbook from last year that I didn’t find until May.
- Reviewing some lessons from Teaching Textbooks.
- Copywork from our History Lessons
- Unit Studies of their choice
- Bible Reading
I am also catching our younger crew up with our six year old, so we can stay together easier.
We are also integrating a more in depth chore schedule with a few more weekly chores added in each day.
This ease in time will also allow me to see where further organization is needed to help get our school year off to a smooth start.
I have set reminders on my phone and on Philip’s Watchminder 3 to help get us on a routine that will allow the best use of our time this year.
What are ways you ease into a new year?

I’m so relieved to read that you’re reviewing and completing a misplaced lapbook! That’s happened here before too! This year, for the first day, I’m taking the kids for a nice breakfast out, photos of everyone while we’re clean of course (!), and then we may visit one or two local historic sites. I’m thinking only the core subjects for the initial week, plenty of reading, Bible, math reviews, and LA. Thanks for sharing!

We are actually going to be working through several lapbooks this year. I love A Journey Through Learning’s products.
Hi
I followed a lead here looking for your “Nature Study Tuesday” link-up parties. I see by your side bar, that you at least use to also host one titled ‘Homeschool Snips and Tips Wednesdays’. Now that you have again begun a school year, do you plan on also starting both of them back up?
See, the reason I ask is that on our blog, we do postings titled ‘Round-up’s of Link-up parties’. The most recent such posting was posted on July 17th, 2011.
I am currently working on our next edition of those, and was going to add your party to our list.
Either way (whether you are or are not) going to again be hosting those, would you please let me know? Thanks-you!

I am planning to bring them back after the school year gets started again and life settles in.
We ease into the week by doing the basics then adding in the electives over the next couple of weeks. That works for us but this year we will be taking some short trips in August so I will just use those breaks as transition times. Thanks for sharing!

While we have done the basics all summer, (math, phonics, a little writing), it’s time to work our way back into full lessons. What we do is add one new subject a week. This week it is science. We’re running on our school schedule, which gives me a chance to see where we have lots of extra time and the next subject will fit in best. We do a specific set of subjects between breakfast and snack, and another between snack and lunch. Right now I have lots of open playing time in our first block because what we’re doing there doesn’t take long. That means when we add in history it will probably go in that block because it takes some time with the reading aloud.
