Our days are full. We live on a small farm in rural Kansas, where you can here tractors groaning, birds chirping and coyotes howling at night. My husband farms alfalfa hay and some wheat. He also does some mechanicing on various items at any point in time. He enjoys taking our children with him on a regular basis as they learning many life long lessons that they can use in their everyday lives-From fixing a flat tire, to swathing hay and negotiating with hay buyers.
We start our day getting up and feeling our animals, which include:
- Horses
- Chickens
- Cats
- Dogs
Normally our children work in teams to get those chores done, while mom makes breakfast. When the children get inside, they work on the before breakfast chores of:
- Laundry is taken to the basement
- Dishwasher is emptied
- Dishwasher is reloaded (if needed)
- I try to get a load of laundry started.
Now we eat breakfast. Then our After Breakfast chores:
- Clear Table
- Load dishwasher
- Wash all other dishes
- Wipe Table
- Vacuum Kitchen
- Turn horses loose and feed hay.
Now it is time for Family School (this is not when we do the activities..only the reading).
- Science
- Geography
- History
- Bible
- Art
Next we start our impendent learning.
- My olders start with their Math, Teaching Textbooks on the computer.
- I work with the younger crowd of four students, Preschool through First Grade.
- About the time I finish with the younger crowd, the olders have finished their math and move to the dining room table to complete their grammar, copywork, writing, and other subject.
- The younger crowd now moves to the family room for activity time which includes puzzles, pattern blocks, math link cubes and other such things.
Growling tummies alert us to the clock which says…LUNCH time. (Hopefully there are leftovers from supper last night) I try to stay out of the kitchen during school hours. Therefore, I plan my menu to have leftovers for lunch 98% of the time. This makes for smoother school days.
After lunch we have quiet time. EVERYONE is required to be in their bed.
After quiet time we have a quick snack then:
- Finish and bookwork
- Do family school projects, mapping, science, history lapbook and stuff.
- A few chores. Laundry, straightening, etc.
Outside play when all that is done, if weather is bad we try to find a Netflix movie that corresponds to our current lessons.
- At the end of outside play we feed animals again.
- By now it is time to cook supper and take bathes. (I really struggle trying to find enough of me to go around)
- We eat supper and chat about our day.
- After supper we have family time, games, movie, story time, or just relaxing.
- BEDTIME!

Leftovers for lunch..yep, yep, yep!
I love that you plan to have leftovers for lunch! We often do but it is not because I planned it—think I may need to ‘steal’ this little nugget- don’t know why I never thought of it before! Visiting from the hop-Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed reading about your homeschooling day. We have chickens and a dog, which always seem to add some fun and excitment to the school day. I like the family time that you have throughout the day.
Have a wonderful school year.
