I have tried a new chore reminder system every year for many years. The biggest problem I have is, I can’t easily change things already written down if something in our home changes. So, as I was contemplating how, I was going to work out a system that would be more adaptable to change, I decided on magnets.
There are many magnetic chore boards and charts on the market, but most of them, are made for the young child with pictures and such. They do not have the more complex chores. So, my computer and I became very close friends.
I made my own chore list for both daily chores and weekly. I made each chore for each child in a different color. Every chore that needs to be done weekly or daily or three or four times a day is printed off for each child in their color.
Magnetic Color Coded Chore Cards
After I printed off the above document, I laminated each page, then my daughter Lora and I cut them out and attached magnetic tape to the back.
I then wrote on our daily board:
- Before Breakfast
- After Breakfast
- School
- Before Lunch
- After Lunch
- After Nap
- Before Supper
- After Supper
Under each time period I place the chores that should be done during that time. Now, each child knows what needs to be done when, and if something needs to be changed for someone, I can easily move things around.
I wish I would of made the font for the chores a little larger, however, then I probably would have needed a larger more expensive board. This board is less then $5 at Wal-Mart right now.
For the Weekly Chore Board I have:
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Saturday
There is no way to mark off the completed chores, but really, I think with the chores being broken down into time periods, if they just work through it, there should be no problem.
So far, this is working nicely. I am teaming a younger child with an older child, so there is always someone in training.
I keep all the extra chore cards separated by area in zip lock baggies.
What is the best chore system you have tried?
